In both the real world and Second Life, I absolutely love attending Renaissance Festivals. I’m a total sucker for the garb and all the accessories. I adore how both peasants and royalty found creative ways to accessorize and carry their everyday essentials—and their weapons—long before purses were even a thing.
The jousts, the washer women, sword fights, archery, bread bowls, parades… I love all of it. Huzzah! 🏹🍞
My love and I did attend the annual SL Ren Fest this year, and while I truly hate to say it, I can’t hide a bit of disappointment. I’m really trying to stay positive, because I know how much work goes into putting an event like this together, and I have no doubt a lot of effort went into this year’s festival.
That said, I think part of it comes from how absolutely blown away we were last year. The layout, the incredible vendors, the ambient tavern sounds—last year put a huge hole in both mine and Alex’s wallets. We bought so much.
This year, unfortunately, we felt like we were walking in circles. It was hard to find a clear path to see all the wares, and honestly, I don’t think we bought a single thing. Maybe our navigation skills were just off that day… but what really took the cake was this particular store.
I honestly couldn’t even tell you who the vendor was—we just found the display absolutely hilarious. As a proud member of the vertically challenged population, this setup was a nightmare for me. Thank goodness this is Second Life and cam shopping exists, but I’m not gonna lie… I just kept walking.
But I digress. It’s not my intention to bash the event or any of the participating vendors. I will always support Relay for Life, and I truly hope next year they return to a layout more like last year’s—it was just easier to explore and enjoy.
That said, we did take some pictures in our garb and attended a couple of events, including jousting and archery!
